The South Burnett Regional Council has urged residents to be cautious when opening council emails after their server was compromised on Monday morning.

The email of council employee, Denise King, was targeted.

Residents were told they may receive an email regarding an invoice or purchase remittance from the council.

A council spokesman said this email may pose a threat to the recipients’ computer network.

“Please immediately delete the email and do not open any attachment or enter any personal details into the link,” he said.

“Our team has been working since the issue to isolate and remove the email threat.”

The council has apologised to residents for any inconvenience caused and has taken immediate action to rectify the breach.

“Council is committed to maintaining the cybersecurity of its employees and email recipients,” he said.

Investigations are ongoing.
