South Burnett Council to ban use of cash at Nanango, Murgon, Wondai dumps

Changes are in the works for how people pay to use three of the South Burnett’s largest dumps.

South Burnett Regional Council councillors, including mayor Brett Otto, will discuss at Wednesday’s meeting whether to stop accepting cash payments at the Nanango, Wondai and Murgon dumps.

Paying with cash at the South Burnett’s dumps may soon become a distant memory with the council considering scrapping it completely.

A proposal to end the acceptance of cash at the Nanango, Murgon and Wondai dumps, bringing them in line with the Kingaroy tip where its use was already abolished.

If approved payments to use these sites will be handled by EFTPOS or through a monthly account.

The handling of cash by contractors and the South Burnett Regional Council remains a risk which would be eliminated by the proposal, the staff report says.

“Many commercial operators already have an account established with council, with an invoice sent each month,” the report says.

“The only fees and charges that apply to domestic users at these facilities are the disposal of dead animals, asbestos, refrigerate items (i.e. fridges, freezers etc), liquid paint, mattresses and tyres,” the report says.

The proposal to abolish the use of cash at these tips is one of more than 40 items to be debated at Wednesday’s council meeting.

Other items on the agenda for the meeting include the Kingaroy Memorial Park and pool master plans, a proposal for councillors to accept a lower salary than the remuneration commission has said they should receive, and a request to change the date of the Bjelke Petersen Dam Fishing Competition.
