A new major accommodation project in Kingaroy is a step closer to reality, with the full plans set to go before South Burnett Regional Council and backed by the community.

The proposed double-storey accommodation units would be an expansion of the popular Pepper Tree Cabins site on Evelyn St, with current plans indicating eight short-term units would be built on the neighbouring vacant block.

Pepper Tree Cabins was established in 2009 and currently houses 32 cabins, with the proposed development to include two units to accommodate people with a disability.

The application was tabled at the SBRC community standing committee meeting on Wednesday, where councillor Danita Potter praised in the inclusive units.

“This is a fantastic application and the fact that we have PWD accommodations there, it’s well needed in and our area,” Cr Potter said.

The application includes “undercover alfresco areas and open-air courtyards” for ground-floor units, as well as balconies for the five upper-floor units.

One nearby resident raised concerns during public submissions due to the proposed size of the development and traffic concerns, but they were dismissed by council officers who said they were addressed in the conditions of the application.

Officers also noted the development could prove a major economic boost for the region and support the area’s tourism push.

The committee unanimously voted to recommend the application be approved at the next general meeting of the council.
