A Brooklands man accused of the fatal hit and run of Sunshine Coast father of two Bryce Williams has had his trial date set in the Kingaroy District Court.

Walter Evan McBryde, 53, is charged with one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance and leaving the scene without seeking help.

Mr Williams, 33, was jogging along Nanango Brooklands Rd, near Kingaroy, when he was allegedly struck by a passing car about 6.30pm on September 6, 2022.

On Monday, September 23, in the Kingaroy District Court, the matter of the trial’s time and location was discussed.

Crown prosecutor Sarah McCray requested the trial be held in the Brisbane Supreme Court, as it was expected to take up to two weeks, and the Brisbane Court could better accommodate that timeframe.

But Mr McBryde’s lawyer, Mark Werner, opposed the request, stating his client lacked the funds to travel to Brisbane for the trial.

Mr Werner also asked for more time to prepare reports, but Judge Paul Smith stressed the need to set a trial date and said a date could help speed up reports being produced.

“If we don’t have a date, things don’t get done,” he said.

Judge Smith also noted that he believed it was important for the matter to remain in the district court. He set May 12, 2025, for the trial to begin in the Kingaroy District Court.

Mr McBryde has yet to enter a plea and remains on bail. The matter will be mentioned again on December 9, 2024.
