South Burnett man slapped with suspended jail sentence after breaching domestic violence order nine times

“You wait till I get home, you little sl-t. I’m gonna make you cry.” A South Burnett man has avoided jail despite terrorising his partner and her children with a string of horrific phone calls.

Violence against women: Australia is facing an epidemic worse than terrorism

During a horrifying jailhouse phone call, a South Burnett man called a six-year-old girl a “c--t” and threatened to cut her and make her cry after she giggled when asked if she still loved him.

Appearing in Kingaroy Magistrates Court via video link, the man pleaded guilty to nine counts of contravening a domestic violence order.

He cannot be named for legal reasons.

The first group of eight offences, which occurred between January and May this year, involved the man threatening to “crack” the skull of the mother of his children and smash everything inside her home to punish her for shopping.

The man called the victim from jail in a separate instance and threatened to physically assault her baby, saying “I’m going to pull her hair out of her skull, that c-nt”, police prosecutor Sergeant Barry Stevens told the court.

Just days later he called again, this time asking to speak to a six-year-old girl.

“(The man) asked the six-year-old if she still loves him, to which she giggled as if to say no,” Sergeant Stevens said.

“He then says, I'll cut this little c--t. You wait till I get home you little sl-t. You’ll want to watch it, I’m gonna make you cry, c--t.”

After being released on parole, the man accompanied the victim and her children to a BP Service Station in Maroochydore. When he went inside to pay for fuel he was alerted to an outstanding $70 bill from the previous week, which he had to pay.

Sergeant Stevens said he became extremely angry at the victim, calling her a sl-t.

The man was represented by Bonnie Djordjevic, who said her client told her he had no intention of acting out these threats and now accepts it’s not acceptable to speak to people this way.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair sentenced the man to six months in jail, which was immediately suspended for three years.

“The (victim) simply doesn't know that she’s not his partner,” Mr Sinclair said.

“Partners are people who are equal, who love one another. He thinks that she’s his property and he says these things in order to control her,”

“And this six-year-old is going to grow up expecting domestic violence to happen to her.”

Convictions were recorded.
