South Burnett man behind bars after breaching domestic violence order

Cheating accusations led to a terrifying incident, in which a woman was forced to arm herself with a weapon before cowering in an effort to escape the father of her children.

A woman was forced to barricade herself in a laundry to escape her enraged partner, who had armed himself with a knife and was accusing her of sleeping with his nephew.

The woman accompanied the man back to his mother’s house on July 18, where he began accusing her of cheating on him with his nephew, police prosecutor Pepe Gangemi told the Kingaroy Magistrates Court.

The man at one point began wielding a large kitchen knife, described as being about 20-30 cm long, causing the woman to barricade herself in the laundry as he continued to hurl abuse at her, calling her a “slut” and saying “you f--ked my nephew”.

The man eventually gained entry to the laundry and stood over the victim with the knife, but the defendant’s sister, who’d stepped in to help, managed to get the weapon off him.

Police arrived and took him into custody however he continued to resist arrest, yelling “f--king dog” and “get out of my mother’s house” while the couple’s children watched from the house.

Sergeant Gangemi said while the victim wasn’t physically harmed in this instance, the man had a prior grievous bodily harm conviction involving the same woman.

Lawyer Bonnie Djordjevic said while her client accepted that holding the knife was wrong, he claimed there was never any intention to actually harm the woman with the knife.

Ms Djordjevic said he was released on parole in November last year after serving a long jail sentence for the grievous bodily harm offence, and until now there hadn’t been any issues.

The man pleaded guilty to contravening a domestic violence order and obstructing police.

He was sentenced to six months’ jail and will be eligible for parole on September 14.

“It‘s quite concerning that you, someone who’s felt the effects of domestic violence, had your kids witnessing you being arrested and taken away in these circumstances,” Mr Sinclair said.

“It’s this sort of behaviour that gets passed on from generation to generation, and unless somebody does something about it, will continue to cause continuing damage to your descendants for many years to come.”
