Australia's domestic violence crisis

A South Burnett father who hurled abuse at and shoved his wife while their young daughter yelled and watched on in fear has faced court.

The man, who cannot be named, was in the garage of his home near Kingaroy in July last year when an argument with his wife escalated into violence.

Confronting footage of the incident was played in the Kingaroy Magistrates Court, with the 28-year-old heard yelling at his wife, who was in tears.

“F--k off! You do it to yourself, just f--k off,” he can be heard screaming.

“This is why no one f--king likes you.”

The man then grabbed his wife by the neck and shoved her into a nearby vehicle, with the couple’s nine-year-old daughter yelling in the background in distress.

Police prosecutor Sean Franklin said that when the man was spoken to by police, he told officers “I know what I have done”.

The court heard there had been significant tension in the relationship leading up to the incident, but that the man and his wife were still together and intended to move forward as a couple.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair acknowledged the offending was out of character and that the man was unmedicated for depressive disorder at the time.

The man pleaded guilty to one count of common assault.

He was fined $1000 and no conviction was recorded.
