A former Chermside resident terrorised her neighbours for months by smashing windows, verbally abusing them and allegedly lighting fires on the road, a South Burnett court heard.

Sharon Anne Suter pleaded guilty in the Nanango Magistrates Court on Monday to two counts of wilful damage and one count of public nuisance, with the latter charge dismissed by the magistrate.

Police prosecutor Lisa Manns said between June 1, 2021 and January 6, 2022 Suter caused a “series of incidents” between her and her two neighbours, a man and woman, when she lived in Chermside West.

The court heard after buying a new car, the man victim parked the car outside of his house and opposite Suter’s address.

“On (July 1) 2021 the victim came out of his address to find the windscreen of the Ford Focus had been smashed with an unknown object by an unknown person at that time,” Sergeant Manns said.

Later that week when the woman victim was working from home, she heard a commotion outside of her house.

“She heard the defendant yelling and swearing across the road at her address,” Sergeant Manns said.

“A short time later an unknown person has thrown an unknown object at (the victim’s) bedroom window which faced the defendant’s house.

“The object has forced the glass window to smash, showering (the victim) and the room with glass.

The court heard the victim contacted police and reported the incident and also installed CCTV cameras.

“At 3am on (June 5) 2022, the victims were asleep in the house, they heard the defendant yelling and heard knocking on the garage door,” Sergeant Manns said.

The court heard one of the victims watched the CCTV footage which showed Suter attempting to open their car, which was parked in the driveway.

The victim yelled out to Suter asking what she was doing, the court heard.

“The defendant then commenced yelling and swearing at the victim,” Sergeant Manns said.

The court was told the victim contacted police but they were unable to attend, the court heard.

“The victim continued watching the CCTV camera and observed an unknown person in the defendants’ rear yard light a fire and pour an unknown liquid on the fire a number of times causing it to flair up,” Sergeant Manns said.

The court heard Suter continued yelling at the victim.

“The victim asked the defendant to leave them alone and the defendant has yelled that she was going to burn the victims’ house down,” Sergeant Manns said.

The court heard Suter then lit two more fires out on the road “towards the victims house”.

Police eventually arrived and found Suter with a tin of petrol and she was transported to hospital for an assessment, the court heard.

Suter’s lawyer, William Kennedy from Beavan Lawyers, said it all started when the victims’ mail arrived at Suter’s address.

“She’s opened it and realised and has taken it to the neighbours,” he said.

“The neighbours have unfortunately thought that she was taking their mail.”

Mr Kennedy said there was some “back and forth” that led up to the damage caused by Suter.

The court was told Suter did have a stalking charge in the District Court but that would be dismissed if she pleaded guilty to the three charges on Monday.

However, because Suter was charged with public nuisance 12 months after the alleged offence, Magistrate Andrew Sinclair dismissed that charge.

Suter was fined $500 for the two wilful damage charges and convictions were recorded.
