Details have emerged after a South Burnett man became trapped in a dirt trench while working on a private property in Mondure on Wednesday, July 7.

Emergency services attended the property on Mondure-Cushnie Road at 12.49pm after the man was “crushed” under some collapsed dirt from the side walls of the trench he was working in, Proston Officer in Charge Sergeant Nolan Jones said.

“He was in a crouched position and the dirt struck his lower back and lower limbs, trapping him in the trench,” Sergeant Jones said.

“His workmates got into the trench and helped remove most of the dirt and debris away from the man.”

Sergeant Jones said the workers were able to move him about 20 metres to a shallower part of the trench before paramedics arrived.

When the emergency services arrived he was about two metres from the surface of the paddock he was working in.

“He was breathing well, alert, covered in mud from waist to feet, and the extrication was delayed due to the stability of the edge of the banks after the high rainfall in the area,” Sergeant Jones said.

The man was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a stable condition with pelvic and back injuries.
