The heartbreaking toll that a brutal one-punch has had on a man has been revealed by detectives as they begin to close in on the Gayndah man who allegedly threw the punch.
The investigating officer from Maryborough District Crime Investigation Branch, Detective Senior Constable Travis Kirby, said detectives are waiting on the victim’s health to improve before taking down his version of events from the night of Saturday, May 22.
Video footage at the scene captured the moment the attacker threw one punch which connected with the head of the man, aged in his 40s, before he fell to bitumen on the road and stopped moving.
The victim suffered a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, and a black eye during the attack on the corner of Bridge and Meson Streets.
“While he’s been released from hospital, he’s still suffering the effects of the assault,” Detective Senior Constable Kirby said.
“We’re waiting for his condition to improve before the investigation can progress.”
He was released from Bundaberg Hospital on Sunday, May 30, where he was under observation, however, police said he is still suffering ill effects, including ongoing headaches.
While the investigation is ongoing, police said the suspect is a Gayndah man.
A witness at the scene told News Corp the incident was triggered by a verbal fight between the victim and another man, who was not responsible for the alleged assault, in the smoking area of the Burnett Hotel.
She said he left the premises and walked across the road before being pursued by a different person.
Three bystanders pulled him from the road and onto the footpath.
