Murgon hit by fresh alleged car thefts days after public meeting
Police have recovered two allegedly stolen vehicles in Murgon as the South Burnett region faces fresh car thefts less than a week after hundreds of residents voiced youth crime concerns.
Less than a week after hundreds of concerned South Burnett residents gathered to discuss the shocking increase in violent crime, another spate of car thefts have struck the region.
Police have confirmed they are investigating two separate alleged car thefts that took place over the past two days in Murgon.
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said officers received reports of an alleged stolen 2021 Mitsubishi Pajero driving at high speed in Cherbourg and Murgon at 7.10am on December 2.
The Mitsubishi had reportedly been stolen from a Watt Street address the previous day.
Police found the vehicle at a service station on the Bunya Highway in Murgon later that morning.
About 10.45am on the same day, the spokeswoman said police received reports that a 2023 Nissan Xtrail had allegedly been stolen from a Shelton Street address.
The Nissan was found a short time later.
About 120 people filled the Murgon Town Hall last week, many sharing personal experiences of how they had been directly impacted by what they say is an increase in violent crime, car thefts and break-ins.
The crowd heard how insurance rates in some South Burnett towns had increased by 30 per cent, how disturbing Cherbourg residents found it to see countless stolen cars driving the streets, and how many people had been victims of crime more than once.
Investigations are ongoing into the most recent reported incidents and two teenage boys, a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old, are currently assisting police with their inquiries.
