A Wondai man has narrowly avoided spending time behind bars after police uncovered several kilograms of drugs in his campervan.

Kingaroy District Court was told officers searched Michael Peter Bradley’s campervan in 2020, uncovering two buckets of marijuana weighing a total of 3.9kg, along with a small quantity of marijuana seeds and utensils.

Crown prosecutor Samantha O’Rourke said the 35-year-old was busted with the drugs with five months left under a suspended jail sentence, which was handed down in 2018 after he pleaded guilty to choking his ex-partner and spitting in her face.

She said the victim was not choked for long and never lost consciousness, which was why Bradley’s two-year sentence was wholly suspended for three years.

Bradley pleaded guilty to possessing dangerous drugs and drug utensils in Murgon Magistrates Court in December last year, with the Wondai sawmill worker placed on probation for 12 months and recommitted to the higher court to answer for the breach.

Defence barrister James Feely contended it would be “unjust” to activate his client’s jail sentence, as this latest offending was irrelevant and trivial in comparison to his previous conviction.

Bradley pleaded guilty to breaching his suspended sentence.

His two-year jail sentence was suspended for another six months.
