A Cherbourg mum, who stole hundreds from elderly volunteers, then drove drunk has been sentenced.

Lorraine Rachel Davidson, 47, appeared in Kingaroy Magistrates Court.

She pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing and one of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

On August 17, Davidson broke into bolt-secured community shop staffroom at Kingaroy.

Police prosecutor Lisa Manns told the court two elderly volunteers working in the store heard a noise in the staffroom and went to investigate.

“They found the defendant inside and asked what she was doing … Davidson said she was ‘dizzy and wanted water’,” Sgt Manns said.

“The defendant drank the water and walked out, the volunteers were missing $265 cash from one of their purses and the other $15 cash.

“The victims devised that the only other person who had been in the room was the defendant.”

Police stopped Davidson in her car the next evening and questioned her.

Sgt Manns said when Davidson was pulled over, she had been drinking and was over the limit.

Principal Solicitor Jay Rose said Davidson was unemployed and cared full time for her two children.

“She has been going through a tough time since the death of her parents,” Ms Rose said.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair said he took Davidson’s guilty plea into account and ordered her to serve 80 hours of community service.

“In the next year you must notify us of any change of work or address and don’t leave Queensland without permission,” Mr Sinclair said.

“Compensation is to be paid to the victims which will be referred to SPER.

“Your license will be cancelled for 12 months and you will have an interlock (a device which requires a breath test before the car will start) on your car when you drive again,” he said.

Convictions were recorded.
