A man who suffered serious injuries after he crashed his Harley Davidson into a stationary vehicle on the D’Aguilar Highway has been convicted of drink driving and driving without due care and attention.

Craig Robert Lewis, 61, pleaded guilty to the charges when he faced Nanango Magistrates Court on Thursday. The court heard his blood alcohol content on the day of the Yarraman accident on June 30, 2024, was .092 per cent.

It heard Mr Lewis had initially denied committing the offences, but pleaded guilty on Thursday.

Police prosecutor Lisa Manns said on the day it happened several vehicles were stopped on the highway while waiting for a break in the oncoming traffic to allow the first vehicle to turn into a driveway.

Sergeant Manns said Mr Lewis turned onto the D’Aguilar Highway, did not identify the stationary vehicles and crashed into the back of a Subaru.

“The defendant has failed to identify the slow moving, stationary vehicle up ahead, braked suddenly and slid the motorcycle across for 10m, before colliding with (the) motor vehicle,” Sgt Manns said.

The court heard the driver of the Subaru saw the Harley Davidson coming towards her “at speed” in her rear vision mirror moments before the collision.

The defendant was briefly questioned by police at the scene before being flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital, and allegedly stated “it must have been my fault”.

Mr Lewis told the court he sustained 14 fractures and spent several days in hospital recovering from the crash.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair acknowledged Mr Lewis had already suffered due to his injuries and damage to his motorcycle, and disqualified him from driving for three months.
