Detectives charge 57 after massive South Burnett drug crackdown

An iced-up Kingaroy man knocked an onlooking security camera out of the way before stealing hundreds of dollars worth of food and tools from popular local cafe Little Italy.

Conor Taylor Fisher told police he was “fried on ice” when he snuck into the cafe’s storeroom in search of food on the night of September 27.

Police prosecutor Lisa Manns told Kingaroy Magistrates Court the 23-year-old took off with a variety of frozen food as well as tools, including drills, a charger, 8-volt batteries, CO2 canisters, a pack of drill bits, ear muffs, and an angle grinder.

Fisher was caught on CCTV despite his efforts to evade being captured on film.

He later told police his memory was “blurred” from the drugs and he only remembered taking a juice popper from the cafe.

Lawyer Mark Werner said his client was homeless at the time and looking for food, adding that Fisher had since been working to turn his life around.

The following week he was busted again when police searched a home in Kingaroy, finding meth and a needle inside a backpack in his room.

Sergeant Manns said Fisher also handed himself over to police in November after he stole tobacco from Rykes fuel in Kingaroy, which he told officers he “needed but couldn’t pay for”.

“When the attendant put the tobacco on the counter he pretended to drop his credit card, picked up the tobacco and ran off without paying,” she told the court.

The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to burglary, unauthorised dealing with shop goods, failing to take reasonable care and precautions with a syringe, possessing dangerous drugs, and disqualified driving.

He was sentenced to six months in jail with immediate parole and ordered to pay $630.60 in restitution. He was also disqualified from driving for two years.

“You're actually a pretty good example of what happens if people continue to fight with drugs and don’t succeed,” Magistrate Andrew Sinclair said.

“Things end up getting worse and worse until you find yourself breaking into premises and stealing food and tools.”
