Australia's domestic violence crisis

A woman has been sentenced to jail over a violent outburst at her parents’ home, in which she hurled abuse at her stepfather and physically attacked both him and her mother.

Alicia Maree Green was living with her mother and stepfather, both aged in their late 60s, at their Maidenwell home on May 11 when she was asked to be quiet so her mother could rest.

Kingaroy Magistrates Court heard Green’s stepfather suffered from Parkinson’s disease and her mother had recently suffered two heart attacks on top of emphysema.

The seemingly simple request enraged Green, who called her stepfather a “low-life paedophile” before putting him in a headlock and punching him.

The 38-year-old raised a fist at her mother when the other woman begged her to stop, then began raining down punches on the pair, with her stepdad laying on top of his wife in an effort to protect her.

Police prosecutor Lisa Manns said Green then grabbed her mother’s hand so tightly that it caused the rings on her victim’s fingers to cut into the skin, causing it to be “peeled back”.

Her mother tried to call triple-zero, but Green grab the phone and threw it across the room, telling her terrified parents, “If the cops come, you won't see tomorrow”.

The Kingaroy court heard Green then threatened to “smash up the house” and used a power cord to cause damage to the front door before beginning to pack her bags.

She was unable to flee before police arrived at the scene, telling officers to “f--k off” before eventually being arrested and taken to the Kingaroy watch-house.

Defence lawyer Mark Werner told the court that the mother of seven suffered from borderline personality disorder and had struggled with substance abuse for much of her life.

He said his client claimed her insult towards her stepfather was prompted by comments the man had previously made towards her, including “You have nice titties,” and, “I could watch your arse all day in jeans”.

Mr Werner said Green would no longer be living with the couple, instead staying with her biological father in Chinchilla upon her release from custody.

Green pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and one each of threatening violence and wilful damage.

She was sentenced to 12 months’ jail, with eligibility for parole on September 11.
