Piggery tests to continue

BIOSECURITY Queensland is not taking any risks at a Kingaroy piggery.
The South Burnett Times revealed last week that a local commercial piggery was in lockdown after 40 pigs died on site due to respiratory problems.
And a Biosecurity Queensland representative said the quarantine would continue.
"The property continues to be quarantined and movement restrictions are still in place," the representative said. "Pigs in only one of four facilities on the property have been suffering from respiratory disease over several months."
The pigs will be monitored, and the representative said they were showing signs of improvement.
"Following treatment all the pigs on the property now appear to be healthy," the representative said.
If the pigs show no symptoms of illness and are cleared over a seven-day period, Biosecurity will allow them to go to slaughter.
The representative said further testing would take place to determine the cause of the deaths and illness.
"The investigation into the affected pigs has revealed several possible causes of the respiratory disease, including bacterial and influenza A infections," the representative said.
"However which of these was the primary cause of the disease is not known. Further testing is being undertaken."
