IT'S been more than two years in the works, but the South Burnett Woodcrafters club is all set to open its new store on September 8.
Peter Peacey has been with the club since its early days.
"I moved here from Emerald. I went to the information centre and asked if they had any people doing woodwork. They put me on to this chap from New Zealand. Together we then decided to put an ad in the local paper. We were the only ones at that first meeting, so then we did that again and we got enough people to form an official club,” Mr Peacey said.
He created the social Woodcrafters group 25 years ago. The club hovers at about 30 people, with men and women involved.
"It's not a men's club,” Mr Peacey said.
"I like seeing lots of females and people of different ages taking part, it gives a much-needed balance to the club.”
Pamela Campbell is the club secretary and has been quite involved with opening the new shop.
"It will be across from St Vinnies,” she said.
"The new shop is at the end of the rail trail, so it's going to work well for us.
"We'll be selling our club members' woodworks. It'll benefit the community and will hopefully serve as a bit of a tourist attraction.
"We're going to have so much more room with this move. We'll be able to make bigger items like garden furniture, chairs and tables.”
Mr Peacey started the club as a way to connect with like-minded community members and after all these year he still enjoys connecting with and mentoring other club members.
"I get the satisfaction of seeing people learning, especially with teaching the younger people about woodwork,” he said.
"It's very social. It's made for a very good retirement hobby.”
