Nanango water supply ‘awful’: councillor

The town water in Nanango is so foul one woman won’t even let her dogs drink it and other residents call it ‘toxic’, but fixing it would cost the council millions.

A South Burnett councillor has admitted to the “awful tasting” town water at Nanango after a local resident’s recent testing revealed what he says are disturbing contaminants.

The resident, who asked to remain anonymous, used a kind of electrolysis tool to compare the Nanango town water with bottled water bought at the supermarket - the test process decomposes ionic compounds into their elements by passing a direct electric current through the water.

It allegedly revealed traces of arsenic and copper oxide in the water, he said.

Another Nanango resident, Mick Thackray, claimed the water was “dangerous poison”.

“No living being should ingest it,” he said.

Councillor Jane Erkens said she did not know how many times the conversation had to be had.

“To get water from the same source as Kingaroy we need water allocation from SunWater (which is) not available at this point,” she said.

“Also we would need a pipeline and a treatment plant.

“We have no funds for that at the moment and it would cost millions.

“Water is tested regularly to ensure it is safe.

“Nobody denies it tastes awful, a bit better if cold. It is high in minerals as is the water throughout the South Burnett,” she said.

Nanango resident Lorree Cox won’t even let her dogs drink it.

“I spend a fortune in bottled water,” she said.
