A witness who was first on the scene of a harrowing single-vehicle crash said the man was “lucky to be alive” after he veered off the road and hit a tree, leaving him with serious injuries.
The man in his 50s was heading home from a fishing trip and was only minutes away from his house before his vehicle left the road at a corner on Black Snake Rd, near Kilkivan, and hitting a tree at about 7pm on Saturday night.
A witness who was first on the scene and is known to the man said he was “struggling to breath” when they first got to him.
The witness, who wishes to remain anonymous, called triple-0 and waited for about 20 minutes before the first emergency services arrive.
“About five minutes before they got there, another man passing by helped and kept talking to (the victim), trying to keep him awake,” the witness said.
They said the conditions were wet and said the victim wasn’t sure what happened but believed his front tire may have struck the gravel on the side of the road, pulling his car off the bitumen.
Police, ambulance and fire crews arrived on the scene with emergency personal needing to cut off the passenger door to extract the man out of the car.
A helicopter was also called in and transferred him to Sunshine Coast University hospital.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said the man sustained chest and arm injuries.
“He has a broken sternum … he’s being released today,” the witness said.
They said the man has lived in the area for about 10 years and described Black Snake Rd as “dangerous” and said a lot of accidents occur on it.
“We’ve tried telling council but nothing gets done,” they said.
