Kingaroy man jailed, kicked off the road for ‘appalling’ driving history

A Kingaroy man’s ‘appalling’ traffic history left a magistrate little choice but to lock him up and keep him out of the driver's seat.

How did COVID-19 lower crime rates?

With dozens of traffic convictions already under his belt at just 23-years-old, serial traffic offender Lachlan Charles Miller was banned by a magistrate from getting back behind the wheel until 2048.

Appearing in Kingaroy Magistrates Court via video link, Miller was sentenced for 27 offences, including nine counts of disqualified driving, four driving unregistered, four using false number plates, three evasions, three counts of dangerous operation, and one each of disobeying the speed limit, failing to stop for police, possessing drug utensils, and resisting police.

The court heard that every offence up until January 28 was committed while Miller was on parole, including seven counts of disqualified driving and two counts of evading police.

Police prosecutor Pepe Gangemi said the most serious offences are the dangerous drives, highlighting a particular incident on January 28, where Miller spotted a police car and drove “dangerously away” at 100km/h in a 50km/h zone.

These offences were stacked upon a history of criminal and traffic offences, including 10 disqualified driving and two dangerous driving convictions.

Defence lawyer Jay Rose said her client instructed that his “appalling” history stemmed from a crack addiction, which started when he was just 12.

Having already spent eight months in pre-sentence custody, Magistrate Andrew Sinclair sentenced Miller to a one year and seven months’ jail, with his parole eligibility date set for October 20 this year.

For the traffic offences, he was disqualified for 27 years, however he’ll be eligible to appeal this decision before a court in two years.

Miller was convicted and not further punished for the more “minor offences”, such as speeding and driving with the wrong number plate.
