In a heartbreaking twist of fate, 53-year-old Jason William Spiteri lost his life in a tragic accident on his own property, leaving his family and friends devastated.

What was meant to be a routine drive turned into a fatal crash on Bunya Mountains Road at Kaimkillenbun, claiming the life of a man known for his kindness, rugged spirit and love for life.

Mr Spiteri, known for his love of fishing, hunting, and working on cars, was described by his daughter Emily Spiteri as a “jack of all trades”.

“Dad loved to talk and was a friend to many,” she said.

“He has four kids, Emily, Will, Jaike, and Charlie, and a granddaughter, Alyssa.

“We are beyond thankful for everyone’s support and kind words in this difficult time.”

Miss Spiteri’s brother, Will Spiteri, has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the funeral and associated costs.

The family has received overwhelming support, with 41 donations raising more than $6000 so far.

“The money raised will go towards his funeral costs, wake, headstone and other associated costs,” Miss Spiteri said.

Reflecting on the unexpected nature of the tragedy, Miss Spiteri said it was a “tough time” but the family was “pushing through” together.

“We’ve also had a great support network around us to help get through this difficult time,” she said.

Miss Spiteri said that her father had undergone open heart surgery in July, and when the airbags deployed during the crash, it “completely shattered his chest”.

The crash happened in his driveway on his way home.

“They believe he just took the corner too wide, causing him to hit the tree, which made the airbags go off,” Miss Spiteri said.

Miss Spiteri said her father had a couple of nicknames, “Spit”, an abbreviation of the family’s name and “Headbutt”.

“Headbutt was a nickname he got from being in a few fights — he always seemed to headbutt people,” she said.

“Everyone always said he had a tough head.

“My dad lived in his cowboy boots, so my family and I, along with a few close friends, will be wearing ours to honour him.”
