Former Nanango student receives bursary

SOUTH Burnett Women's International Women's Day Breakfast was a success with a past Nanango High School student being awarded a $5000 bursary for her tertiary studies.

The breakfast was at Cassis restaurant on the Booie Range and featured guest speaker Melissa Barnett.

The annual Ellen Mary Kent Hughes Memorial Scholarship of $5000 was awarded to Kaitlin Moat.

Ms Moat graduated from Nanango State High School in 2016 and spent last year working to save for university.

This year Ms Moat has started her university degree at the University of Queensland.

She is studying a bachelor of psychological science in a honours program.

"I'm pretty lucky to get it," Ms Moat said.

"So far I'm doing really well. In one of my classes I'm in the top 10% of students....so I'm already putting in the hours and getting the results.

"It's been really good because there's a lot of people in my classes who are quite like me and have the same studying mind set."

Ms Moat said she wouldn't be where she is now without support from strong women in her life.

"My mum is so smart. She's a big inspiration me. She's motivated me and a lot of what I've done," Ms Moat said.

"Also through my schooling years I've been lucky enough to have a lot of really influential female teachers. They motivated me for success and were behind me 100 per cent. Always there to kick my butt into gear when I needed it."
