Before running out onto the field and shining on his Origin debut, South Burnett’s wonder kid Selwyn Cobbo sent a very special message to his hometown.
The 20-year-old young gun winger was a star in during the Maroons 16-10 win over New South Wales on Wednesday night, setting up Queensland’s first try of the evening in his Origin debut.
But before he ran out onto the field, he recorded a video message for his fans in Cherbourg – thanking them for their support and encouraging the youngsters to stay in school.
“I just want to thank you all for the loving and the support that you’ve given me through my journey to get where I’m at today,” Cobbo said in the video message.
“Just little special message to the little kids, I want you all to go to school everyday and stay in school. Listen to your mum and dad, also the teachers, make good choices and stay away from bad people.”
The youngster, who only turned 20 on Sunday, shared the video on social media and the message was also played at the Cherbourg Sporting Complex where many in the town gathered to cheer on their hometown hero.
Cobbo also had a special word for his older fans.
“Also a message to the uncles and aunties – don’t be drinking too much tonight,” he said.
“I love you all, love my home, love where I come from, I love Cherbourg so much, you all mean so much.
“Can’t wait to see you all when I get back – up the Maroons!”
Speaking before the game, Cobbo said he was playing for his hometown as well as his state.
“The whole town will be going off,” Cobbo said. “They will support me every step of the way, as they always have. They support me in everything I do.
“At the start of this year I wrote down a couple of goals. I wanted to make the All Stars and I achieved that. I also wrote down that I wanted to play for the Maroons.
“I didn’t think I would be in the team this year. It’s another goal achieved. It’s exciting.”
