REVEALED: Burnett region’s high school top achievers for 2021

Despite another year of disruption due to Covid-19, Burnett students have thrived. Now, most of the region’s Dux awardees have been revealed.

Through what has been another tumultuous year for high school students, the North and South Burnett region’s tenacious teens have excelled.

The Central and North and South Burnett Times has compiled a list of the region’s Dux award recipients, who have excelled across an impressive array of subjects.

Some schools are yet to finalise or award their Dux, due to the newly-introduced ATAR system.

Congratulations to all who did their best this year and to the Burnett region’s outstanding teachers.

Murgon State High School

Murgon State High School’s 2021 Dux, Bridey Wessling, has been enrolled at Murgon State High School since January 2016 and was the 2021 Murgon SHS School Captain and Treasurer of the Interact Committee.

From 2016 onwards, Bridey has consistently attained the award for Academic Excellence in Years 7, 8, 10 and 11.

She achieved the Principal’s Award for Academic Excellence in Year 9 and was named the 2021 Year 12 School Dux through achieving the award for Mathematical Methods, Biology, Chemistry, English, Modern History, Food & Nutrition Studies, a General Subject Merit Award and a PBL Gold Award.

Bridey has achieved many Murgon SHS Special Awards including the 2021 ADF Long Tan STEM & Innovation Award, the 2021 Rotary Excellence in STEM, and the 2021 Academic Excellence in English and Humanities Award.

She was also presented with a PBL Gold Award for being in the top 20 per cent of students who met the PBL Universal Expectations throughout the year.

Nanango State High School's 2021 Dux, Genevieve Badesso, has excelled in English, mathematics Methods, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geography.

Genevieve also received the Envirospheres science Award, which is awarded to a Year 12 student who has achieved the highest science result across at least two of the science disciplines.

Genevieve studied all three academic sciences and received the subject awards for Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Kingaroy State High School

Josee Currin was awarded Kingaroy State High School's 2021 Senior Dux after having an outstanding year academically.

She’s managed to achieve extremely high standards in English, maths Methods, Ancient History, Modern History and Legal Studies and is a worthy winner of the prestigious academic award.

Josee is also a very positive, polite and respectful young person and has been an amazing role model to her peers.

Burnett State College’s 2021 Dux Harrison Kemp has set the gold standard for what it means to be an exemplary student, excelling at a range of subjects including English, Math Methods, Physics, Biology, Physical Education and also did engineering as his 6th subject.

Harrison has applied to university to study Engineering or teaching as well as in the process of applying for apprenticeships.

Harrison was also our BSC School Captain for 2021 and was also awarded Ampol All Rounder Award as well as the ADF Long Tan Award.

St Mary’s Catholic College and Monto State High School’s 2021 Dux will be announced and awarded early in 2022.
