The Murgon community and the Queensland RSL sub-branch gathered to welcome the Veteran’s Memorial Park on Saturday at Gore Street, Murgon.
The grand opening honoured veterans of post World War II wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations, as well as a celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s 70 years of service to Australia.
The highly anticipated event included the unveiling of a plaque among 30 newly planted trees.
Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton and Murgon RSL President Kevin Gill opened the peaceful space with a ribbon cutting.
An RSL Queensland spokesman said a prominent feature of the park is the installation of the replica Long Tan Cross, which has been erected in honour of those who served and lost their lives in the Vietnam War.
“Commemorative plaques have also been installed, honouring wars and conflicts in Vietnam, East Timor, Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as acknowledging Peacekeeping Forces,” Mrs Saftich said.
RSL Wide Bay Burnett president Trevor Williamson said the commemorative plaques were an important addition to the community.
“The RSL is honoured to be able to create this peaceful place of reflection,” Mr Williamson said.
“With the inclusion of a tribute to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the park also allows for honourable reflection on the late Queen Elizabeth II and her commitment to lifelong service, including her war service and support for veterans.”
The construction was funded by the state government’s 2022 Queensland Remembers grant program, and the Federal Government’s planting trees for the Queen’s Jubilee programs.
