Gold Coast teen race car drivers walk away from crash unscathed

After Covid-19 put the brakes on last year’s event, the Kings Royal roared back into Kingaroy last weekend, with many hailing the vent as the best yet.

Over three days of racing, dozens of competitors went up against each other in a massive octane filled thrill-fest.

Kingaroy Speedway President Tanya Barron was over the moon with the event.

“Wow, what a race meeting!” she wrote on facebook.

“When this idea of a “Kings Royal” for Modified Sedans and to pay $10K to the winner came about 10 years who would have ever thought what it got to over this past weekend.

“I don’t know about anyone else but what a weekend of racing.”

The weekend had it all, including a terrifying crash involving two young racers on Friday night – but thankfully both walk away unscathed.

The Gold Coast’s Harry ‘The Flash’ Fowler and best mate Toowoomba’s Josh Ciesiolka were racing in the junior sedan category on Friday night when Josh lost control of his car.

It flipped into the air and slammed into 15-year-old Harry’s windscreen as his in-car camera recorded the terrifying moment.

“I was driving along and then I saw him (Josh) get up on two wheels so I braked,” Harry told Sunrise.

“And then all of a sudden, he landed on my bonnet.”

Harry’s dad Grant, who has to give his son special permission to race because he doesn’t have a driver’s licence, was trackside to witness the frightening crash.

“I wasn’t expecting that … I said a few words that I can’t say on telly,” he told Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and David Koch.

“It was shock at first but I just knew he was safe. The safety gear in these cars is phenomenal and the crash crews were straight there on the scene.”

Both Harry and Josh were uninjured and are looking forward to their next duel.

But the main event was the King’s Royal Modified Sedan A Main, with Victorian Brock Atkins taking the win, in second place was veteran Gary Pagel.

Taking out the third step on the podium was Brenton Scott. Kingaroy’s very own Brett Barron crossed the line in the fourth and Mason Cameron rounded out in fifth position.

Sarah Franz was crowned the winner of the Queens Royal.
