Kingaroy gamer Damian Nicholson uses gaming for good, raising funds for the Starlight Foundation’s #GameChangers appeal

Kingaroy Twitch streamer Sparhawk Games has raised thousands for charity since harnessing his platform for a string of good causes.

Kingaroy’s keyboard warrior Damian Nicholson is taking to Twitch for charity once again, battling it out online to raise funds for the Starlight Foundation and help keep a smile on the faces of sick kids.

Going by the PC handle Sparhawk Games, the former teacher and karate instructor has joined the foundation’s fourth consecutive #GameChangers appeal, which runs until September 5 to raise vital funds for sick children and teens across Australia.

Using the Tiltify crowd funding platform, gamers like Mr Nicholson can broadcast their virtual universe to an online community and bring in hundreds or even thousands of dollars for their charity of choice.

Mr Nicholson said the platform is designed specifically for charities, so all proceeds go directly to the Starlight Foundation rather than via the streamers themselves.

Originally working at Kingaroy State High School, Mr Nicholson discovered the vibrant online gaming community after making the switch to working from home and launched into streaming with a little help from a friend.

Since then, through the Sparhawk Games Twitch community, Mr Nicholson has raised over $5000 for the World Wildlife Foundation, Starlight Children’s Foundation and the Benevolent Hope Academy in Kenya.

As part of each campaign Mr Nicholson also runs a themed trivia night, where folks across the nation can test their knowledge on a range of topics such as Harry Potter and Star Wars.

On Thursday, August 26, Sparhawk Games with be challenging entrants to a Marvel Cinematic Universe Trivia Night, which is free to enter.

“There’s no costing associated, but it’s we tend to find that when people come along and have a good time, they might throw five bucks into the donation link,” Mr Nicholson said.
