Tributes are flowing after it was confirmed former longstanding mayor and Cherbourg elder Uncle Ken (Burra) Bone has died.
The Wakka Wakka elder passed away on Wednesday morning, aged 75.
Uncle Ken spent more than two decades serving the community as a member of the Cherbourg council, first as a councillor, then chairman and finally mayor.
He was first elected mayor in 2000 and, aside from a break between 2008 and 2012, remained in that role until he resigned in 2016.
“I’m climbing the ladder of old age, and I’ve been on the Cherbourg Council since 1990,” he said at the time.
“There are a lot of younger ones running (for council). I believe it's a good sign.
“I think it's about time people had more interest in the community.”
The Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council made the sad announcement that Pop Burra had passed away, paying tribute to the great leader.
“We have many fond memories of Uncle, his many achievements and dedication to Cherbourg, advocating and looking out for the needs of community, his sense of humour and fair play,” the council said.
“One of his passions included our community radio 4UM where he also served on the board as president.
“We will miss you, Burra.”
The Ration Shed Museum also shared a tribute on their facebook, with Uncle Ken a strong supporter of the museum.
“We mourn his passing and send our love and condolences to his family and friends. RIP Burra,” it said.
