Wondai will soon be home to a high-impact timber manufacturing facility following the South Burnett Regional Council’s approval of a new development permit for Parkside Building Supplies Pty Ltd.
The decision was made during a general council meeting on August 21, 2024.
Located at 2-30 Kemp St, the facility will focus on producing wooden and laminated products.
The development, which is classified as a high impact industry, will also involve an environmentally relevant activity as part of its operations.
The manufacturing process, outlined in a site-based management plan prepared by Range Environmental Consultants, includes producing 5000 to 10,000 tonne of reconstituted timber products annually.
The facility is also expected to process up to 6000 tonne of timber annually, with maximum capacity projected to be reached within five years of commencing operations.
The facility will consist of key infrastructure, including a glue lines building for finger-joining spotted gum sourced from the Wondai Dry Mill into glue-laminated timber and deck blanks.
It will also feature a racker and stacker building, new driveway access, and car parking facilities with a minimum of 42 spaces, including disabled parking.
Because of the type of work involved, environmental management reviews will be conducted every year, along with regular staff training and record-keeping.
A review by Range Environmental found that all potential environmental impacts from the operation were rated as ‘low’.
Operating hours for the plant will be 7am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, with manufacturing limited to 7am to 3.30pm, excluding public holidays.
The facility will employ 10 full-time workers and is expected to contribute to the local timber industry and economy.
A start date for construction has yet to be announced.
