Ice age: Moment police bust 'multi-tiered' drug syndicate

A meth-dealing dad, former bank manager and publican at a popular hotel are just some of the Burnett residents who’ve made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

As drugs continue to be a scourge on our community, the South and Central and North Burnett Times has compiled a list of those who have been sentenced for supplying meth and marijuana in the Burnett region.

Bank manager turned drug trafficker jailed

A former bank manager has spent time behind bars after he was caught trafficking ice during a large-scale undercover police operation.

Shaun Joseph Wagner, 31, sold methylamphetamine to a “very large customer base” over 10 months in the South Burnett region to feed his and his wife‘s ice addiction.

Wagner appeared in Brisbane Supreme Court in December last year, where he was sentenced to three years‘ jail after pleading guilty to drug trafficking, supplying weapons and another drug offence.

The court was told the Kingaroy man had worked for nine years for National Australia Bank, rising up the ranks to become a bank manager.

In 2018, Wagner became the subject of a five-month police operation in which he sold 50g of ice to an undercover officer.

His defence argued he had shown significant co-operation with police, making full disclosures to officers about his trafficking, and had stopped taking drugs of his own accord.

A North Burnett publican dealt more than 38g of marijuana to covert police officers over three separate occasions in 2019.

Gayndah Magistrates Court heard the covert officers asked Barnicoat if she knew where they could “get on”, a slang term for buying drugs, and she advised them she could supply them with marijuana.

Barnicoat dealt to the officers in increasing increments: 2.24g, 6.62g, then 29.37g.

She was charged with three counts of supplying dangerous drugs and one count each of possessing dangerous drugs and possessing a used utensil.

Barnicoat pleaded guilty to the five drug charges as well as a charge of failing to appear in accordance with an undertaking.

She was sentenced to 18 months‘ probation for the drug charges but escaped additional punishment from the failure to appear charge.

All convictions were recorded.

Judge blasts South Burnett meth dealer and father

A single father narrowly avoided spending time in prison after he supplied meth in the Burnett while addicted to the drug himself.

Mark Holton, 53, faced Kingaroy District Court on Monday, February 15, on two charges of supplying a dangerous drug and possession of a mobile phone used in the commission of a crime.

The court was told in May last year, police executed a search warrant at the single father‘s home where they found clip sealed bags that contained 0.1 grams of methamphetamine, used needles and syringes that had not been appropriately disposed of, and a glass pipe among other things.

Holton was sentenced to nine months in prison, which was suspended for three years.

Kingaroy dad sold meth to a friend, faces a potential jail term

Mark William Owens

A Kingaroy man luckily escaped spending Christmas behind bars for careless drug offences, instead of piling another six months on top of his suspended jail sentence.

Mark William Owens, 25, was convicted back in May 2019 for supplying methamphetamine to a family friend, earning himself $150. At the end of 2020 he found himself back before the district court for breaching his suspended sentence on two occasions.

“The breaching offences are drug offences, but they are cannabis as opposed to methylamphetamine,” Defence lawyer Catherine Cuthbert said.

Judge Geraldine Dann extended Owens‘ suspended sentence by a further six months.

“I want to impress upon you that the judge sitting at this bench, if you come in here again, may well look very sternly on your situation. So you must be aware of that in terms of how you manage your life going forward,” she said.

Convictions were recorded.
