A SKETCH of the late Steve Irwin welcoming animal bushfire victims has driven many Australians to tears.
Expatriate and artist Sharnia-Mae Sturm II posted her poignant sketch to her sketchy_koala Instagram account only days ago, with the image having quickly resonated across the country.
The drawing depicts Australian animals next to the word “Crikey!” followed by a kneeling Steve Irwin saying ‘Don’t worry little guys! I’ll take care of you.”
On the Instagram post, Ms Sturm wrote she started the sketch three weeks earlier.
“It’s sad to say that I’ve spent about three weeks or so on this and the subject is still relevant,” she said.

“This little tribute drawing goes to all the innocent animals caught in the blazes across my home country, it breaks my heart to see it’s still going on but there’s only so much that can be done to keep it from spreading.
“I hope all the animals who couldn’t make it are now in heaven with Steve Irwin, being taken care of, and not having a care in the world or memory of how they got there.
“Rest in Peace fuzzy babies, we will miss you.”
Originally from Kambalda in WA, Ms Sturm now lives in the state of Georgia in the USA with her husband, Marshall.
The sketch is among a number of Australian bushfire-related images that have been created by various artists around the country.
Ms Sturm’s sketch has already been shared via Instagram, Facebook, Reddit and Twitter, with many commenting that they burst into tears at seeing the artwork.
“This is so beautiful. Such tears,” Instagram user lili.loo234 posted.
On Reddit, a user called Stoaticor posted that the sketch tipped them over the edge.
“I’ve seen some pretty (expletive) up pictures today including the baby roo pic, but this is the one that just made me burst into tears,” they wrote.
Another Reddit user called peaceoutseacreast wrote: “My gosh, this is the image that broke me tonight.”
Boesmankar wrote it was a welcoming thought.
“Inbetween all the awful images and news of the fires, this one is very welcoming and heartwarming. Thanx (sic) Steve.”
Ms Sturm is now hoping her poignant sketch of the late Crocodile Hunter reaching out to animals killed by bushfires will reach the Irwin family, who run Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast.
Tina Bryant, who tagged the Irwin’s under the image on Instagram, said her daughter was a huge Steve Irwin fan.
“I hope the digital drawing my daughter created from her new home in Georgia in the USA has made you proud,” she wrote.
“Shania is a huge Steve Irwin fan.”
