Sinkhole closes busy intersection near Pacific Fair on Gold Coast

A large sinkhole has shut down a busy intersection near Pacific Fair on the Gold Coast, with fears the road may collapse. WATCH THE VIDEO

A major Gold Coast intersection has been closed due to fears the road may collapse, after a large sinkhole emerged early this morning.

The sinkhole appeared just after 6am at the major intersection behind Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, on the corner of Sunshine Blvd and Hooker Blvd.

It’s believed the large hole in the road is a result of a burst water main.

Police have been called to navigate peak-hour traffic around the area while the surrounding roads have been closed.

Motorists are advised to seek an alternate route.

A council spokeswoman said the repairs could take “one to two days”.

A large sinkhole has formed on Sunshine Boulevard near Pacific Fair.

“The damage is on the northbound side of Sunshine Boulevard opposite the 7/11 petrol station,” she said.

“The damage to the road is extensive and is expected to take one to two days to make repairs to the water main, ensure other adjacent services are reinstated and reinstate the road.

“Traffic is being diverted through the Pacific Fair carpark, however motorists are advised to avoid the area.

“Water supply to the area is not affected however customers may experience lower water pressure during the repairs.”
