Serious two-vehicle accident on Warrego Highway at Lawes, west of Brisbane

One person has died despite the frantic efforts of two off-duty doctors while a man is fighting for life after a crash west of Brisbane.

One person has died despite the frantic efforts of two off-duty doctors who stopped at a horror two-vehicle crash on the Warrego Highway west of Brisbane overnight.

The crash occurred near the University of Queensland Gatton campus at Lawes in the Lockyer Valley about 10.40pm.

A red 1999 Mitsubishi Lancer sedan and green 2022 Toyota Avalon sedan collided travelling westbound.

The two occupants of the Mitsubishi suffered critical injuries and were immediately provided expert care by two off-duty doctors who stopped to help before emergency services arrived.

The passenger died at the scene while the male driver was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

Police are working to establish the identities of the pair.

The three occupants of the Toyota were seriously injured, including a woman in her 30s with back and chest pain, a man in his 20s with back pain and minor injuries, and a woman in her 30s with chest pain.

The Warrego Highway was closed for up to five hours and reopened about 4am.

Forensic Crash Unit investigators are appealing for witnesses, especially those with dashcam vision of the crash, or the moments leading up to it to come forward.
