Fireworks, Burnouts, Joyrides: Hoons post illegal antics online

Logan has been branded Queensland’s hooning capital, with disturbing new videos emerging of masked youths setting off fireworks from moving cars and pulling dangerous stunts behind the wheel.

Logan Mayor Jon Raven has called for all levels of government to band together to combat escalating crime, as the region’s suburbs become a playground for hooning gangs.

The Courier-Mail has obtained a series of reckless hooning videos shared by interlinked social media accounts, showing youths terrorising neighbourhoods across Brisbane and Logan.

In one clip, fireworks are launched from speeding vehicles, while others show burnouts and high-speed drifts performed by masked drivers.

A video posted on March 7, captioned “Alfred” alongside a cyclone emoji, shows dozens of cars converging on an industrial estate as locals hunkered down amid wild weather.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said officers were working to disrupt illegal street racing and reckless driving networks.

“Penalties reflect the seriousness of these offences,” the spokesman said.

“Creating unnecessary noise or smoke carries a fine of up to $3226.

“More serious offences like careless driving or street racing can result in a $6452 fine or up to six months in jail.”

Police have charged more than 3000 juveniles and 6000 adults with hooning-related offences between March 2023 and January 2025. Officers also have powers to impound, immobilise, or seize hoon vehicles.

Logan resident Peter Lomas said he had twice fallen victim to thefts linked to hooning groups, after thieves stole thousands of dollars’ worth of tools from his son’s ute.

“I’ve seen them cruising around in a white Falcon ute with no plates,” Mr Lomas said. “They took $10,000 to $12,000 worth of tools – this is the second time they’ve hit my son’s ute. He’s only weeks away from finishing his apprenticeship and had to borrow money from his boss just to replace the tools.”

Mr Lomas said the offenders used nearby streets as “a private skid pad.”

“Every Friday and Saturday night you hear the engines and tyres screeching across Edens Landing and Holmview,” he said. “A lot of locals are fed up.”

A meeting between Mr Lomas and Cr Raven has been postponed until April due to Cyclone Alfred.

Cr Raven said hooning was “a region-wide problem” and urged all tiers of government to work together.

“We’re the only council in Queensland with police officers monitoring our camera room 24/7,” he said.

Logan City Council has around 1400 CCTV cameras, recently bolstered by mobile and covert cameras to clamp down on hooning and anti-social behaviour.

“These cameras help QPS target hotspots, gather evidence and crack down with fines, demerit points, and car impoundments,” Cr Raven said.
