Police locate body of 20-year-old missing in Mary River, Kybong

Police have found the body of a 20-year-old man who went missing during a midnight swim near Gympie overnight.

Police have found the body of a 20-year-old man who was reported missing at Kybong near Gympie on Thursday night.

His body was found around 80 metres away from where he was last seen swimming in the Mary River.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

It comes after a major search involving police divers.

The 20-year-old was camping with a group of friends and was swimming in the Mary River, at the corner of Traveston Crossing Rd and Dobson Rd, when he went missing.
He was last seen by a group of people just after midnight and was in waist-deep water.

“The group were using headlights to light the water near their campground where they were wading,” police said in a statement.

“They saw the man, turned around and then noticed he had disappeared.

“Three Queensland Fire and Emergency Service swift water rescue crews assisted to try and locate the man without any luck.

“Police are continuing their search today, assisted by divers and State Emergency Service personnel who are scouring the area.”
