THE search for two fishermen missing since Saturday has been called off.
Rescue crews conducted an extensive land, air and sea search for Carwyn Massey, 25, and Timothy Maher, 31, after they failed to return from a fishing trip on Moreton Bay.
The duo headed out on Saturday, when winds exceeded 25 knots, and were last heard from that evening when they contacted relatives to inform them they were heading back.
Their distinctive 3.3-metre blue tinny was located on Sunday, along with life jackets and other items.
Queensland Water Police, the Coast Guard, the RACQ’s LifeFlight, as well as members of the Volunteer Marine Rescue, mobilised helicopters and boats to search Moreton Bay.
In a statement released on Friday, police said the families of the two men had been notified that the search would not continue.
“Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the men at this very difficult time,” the statement said.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
