A 12-year-old boy has been taken to hospital after a freak accident saw him impaled by a javelin at one of the Gold Coast’s most prestigious schools.

The student from Saint Stephen’s College at Coomera, was taking part in a PE class on the oval just before 11am when he tripped over a javelin which was embedded in the ground.

He fell on top of the javelin, which pierced his groin.

Fire rescue crews used cutting equipment to snap off the ends of the javelin, but part of it remained in the boy’s body as he was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

A QAS spokeswoman said the young boy, reportedly in his pre-teens, was stable, and is being assessed for a groin injury following an incident involving a javelin at 10.52am.

The high acuity response unit and critical care paramedics are on scene.

Queensland Ambulance Service Gold Coast Operations Supervisor Stuart Cutajar said there had been triple-0 calls about the incident.

“Shortly before 11 o’clock, Queensland Ambulance Service received triple-0 calls and responded to a 12-year-old male with a penetrating injury to his groin,” Mr Cutajar said.

“Ambulance paramedics arrived on scene and treated that 12-year-old boy for that injury.

“We liaised with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services who assisted us with removing the object, and that patient was able to be treated on scene, loaded and transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.”

According to Mr Cutajar, the boy was “conscious and alert,” and “ able to respond effectively to the paramedics who were treating him.”

He said the injury was non-life-threatening and resulted in minimal blood loss.

“(He was) very lucky, my word,” Mr Cutajar said.

A school spokesperson said the boy was given assistance by the college’s nurse before paramedics arrived.

“The student’s parents were immediately contacted and support is being offered to those impacted by the incident.

“The welfare of our students remains the number one priority of the College.”
