Financial pressures on pet owners and rising event costs have forced the axing of the popular Million Paws Walk RSPCA fundraiser after 30 years.
The walk, in May, will be the last, with organisers saying it was a tough call to scrap an event that began in 1994 and has raised $17m.
More than 400,000 dogs and 750,000 people have taken part.
RSPCA Queensland spokesperson said: “The financial strain on animal lovers and increasing event costs has meant Million Paws Walk is no longer able to provide what it once could to the community while also effectively fundraising for much-needed RSPCA services.
“The RSPCA feels it best to channel resources directly to support the animals in our care, and ensure every dollar donated to our cause supports the critical services and care that have become increasingly costly to provide.”
The final walk will be on Sunday, May 25, at eight locations across the state: Brisbane, Cairns, Dakabin, Gold Coast, Mackay, Noosa, Toowoomba and Hervey Bay
Million Paws Walk was instigated in 1994 by vet Cam Day, then RSPCA Queensland operations manager.
Dr Day believed that as well as raising funds it could also promote responsible pet ownership.
