RSPCA: Big discount offered to desex your pet

IN a bid to cut down on the number of litters or pregnant pets abandoned and surrendered to animal shelters, the RSPCA is offering up a big incentive to get pets desexed.

PET owners are being urged to prioritise desexing their cats and dogs to reduce the number of litters or pregnant pets abandoned and surrendered to shelters.

The RSPCA will be running “Operation Wanted” until August 31 – a campaign offering a 20 per cent discount on desexing procedures and registration fees in a bid to encourage owners to get serious about desexing.

RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty said fewer than 50 per cent of domesticated animals that came through their shelters had been desexed.

“It is heartbreaking to see the number of pets that are unwanted, despite the fact that pregnancies are easily prevented by a relatively inexpensive procedure that only takes a few hours and a single trip to the vet,” he said.

More than 180 veterinary clinics across Queensland are participating in the campaign, which last year saw 20,000 pets desexed from June 1 to August 31.
