Two Balonne Shire Council workers were rushed to hospital after a two-vehicle crash in St George.

A man in his 20s and a woman in her teens were both injured after their cars collided on the corner of Barlee and Arthur streets in St George, just before 8.45am on Thursday.

One of the injured occupants has since been flown to a Brisbane hospital.

The man and woman, both Balonne Shire Council employees, were occupants of a council vehicle at the time of the crash. The occupant of the other vehicle was not injured, according to a Balonne Shire Council spokesperson who described the crash as “serious”.

“Two council employees have been taken to the St George Hospital for treatment and council has contacted the families of these employees,” the spokesperson said.

“Emergency services and council acted immediately to attend the scene and acted swiftly to contain chemicals that were being transported in the council vehicle to ensure they did not enter the drainage system.

“Council will be undertaking an internal review of the incident and will be fully co-operating with the authorities in relation to any broader investigation into this incident.”

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said the man had injuries to his face, while the woman had injuries to her hand.

The spokeswoman said both were taken to St George Hospital in a stable condition.

A police spokeswoman said while there would be an investigation into the cause of the accident, it did not seem too serious, with the incident only causing minor traffic delays in town.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said two fire crews arrived on scene just before 9am.

The spokeswoman said no entrapments were reported, and a small spill of RoundUp was quickly contained.
