Emergency crews battle difficult conditions to restore power to thousands of homes in Roma

Floodwaters have cut off roads around Roma, with residents warned things could get worse with severe storms set to lash the area and dump massive amounts of rain.

BOM meteorologist Livio Regano said the region was almost guaranteed to be hit by thunderstorms between Thursday and Friday, bringing up to 50mm.

“There’ll be general widespread showers, but within those showers will be embedded thunderstorms and they’ll be quite isolated,” he said.

“If you happen to be under one of them, you could get 50mm.”

Swollen rivers and creeks have already forced Knayers Ln and Burtons Rd to close east of the Carnarvon Highway.

Mr Regano said if that rain continued, the biggest threat would be from the Condamine and Balonne Rivers, which were currently under a flood warning.

Forecasters will be watching the rainfall over the next 24hrs to decide whether to declare a Flood Watch for Roma.

“A lot of the rivers affecting the Maranoa now could easily go under flood,” Mr Regano said.

Conditions are expected to ease over the weekend, with only a 50 per cent chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday.

The type of severe winds that tore through Roma earlier this month, lifting the roofs off of homes, will also be mostly absent.

“All thunderstorms have the potential for damaging winds, but within these thunderstorms, no, the wind is going to be very moderate,” Mr Regano said.

Meanwhile, the state’s east will continue to be lashed throughout the coming week.

“Eastern Queensland is going to get rained on pretty much every day for the rest of the next week or so,” Mr Regano said.
