TENNIS: The start of the new school term has also marked sign-up time for tennis in Roma.

There is something for everyone on the courts at Tennis Maranoa, with a variety of squads and groups taking bookings this week, and the beginning of a team fixture.

Club president and coach Dean Stansell said Tennis Maranoa welcomed everyone.

"We've got coaching for all ages, starting at five years old and going up.

"We also have group lessons, private lessons, various levels of squads, and the ANZ Hot Shots program for kids aged between four and 12.”

While the club runs the sport all year round, summer hasbeen the most popular time of year for locals to play, Mr Stansell said.

"Tennis here in Roma is picking up, we've gone from 60 kids up to 130, so it's really grown quite a lot.

"On the whole, numbers are still growing all through the year.

"Normally tennis is quite popular in the summer, term four and term one, when there are major tennis events on like the Brisbane International and the Australian Open,” he said.

"Our popularity can depend on time of the year; in the winter months there's a lot of participation at the junior level in other sports.

"So tennis has become a big summer sport where we see the girls come over from netball and the boys from football, but we do train, and hold fixtures and tournaments all year round,” he said.

This Friday the club is holding a muster for the upcoming season.

During the evening meeting, teams will be organised for competition rounds, starting next week.
