Comeback Dreamers fitting winners at Dirran carnival

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: Comeback Dreamers won the Queensland Emus rugby league carnival in Dirranbandi on Saturday.

The first rugby league carnival in Dirranbandi in six years was off to a warm start, but not even an afternoon thunderstorm could stop the Comeback Dreamers from taking out the day.

Around 400 spectators watched on as rugby league returned to Dirranbandi, part of a weekend-long event organised by the Southwest Queensland Emus.

President Gary Halliday said the day had been a huge success.

"It was great to see rugby league back in Dirranbandi,” he said.

"We had teams from all over play, from as far away as Ipswich, so it was great to see so many come out to play some really good rugby league.”

The weekend began with a presentation evening on Friday, where 35 players were recognised for their dedication to the game in Dirranbandi, up to 1978.

Edgar 'Sonny' Draper took home the community spirit award for his efforts as an A Grade player and coach over the years.

Les Judge was recognised as one of the most influential players in Dirranbandi rugby league's early days, and his jersey was presented to his wife on the night.

"He's a worthy recipient,” said Mr Halliday.

On Saturday, seven teams played over seven rounds of football, before two semi finals and the grand final played at 4pm, with the Comeback Dreamers taking out Popy Deks Boys 28-24.

"We'll do it again next year for sure.

"I'd like to thank everyone involved for making sure the day went off without a hitch.”
