A family-owned jewellery store is out of pocket tens of thousands of dollars after thieves ransacked their store and now the owners are calling for something to be down about the spiralling youth crime scourge inflicting pain across the southwest.
Roma’s Coomber Brothers was raided in a dramatic 52-second smash and grab in the early hours of Monday morning, with CCTV footage capturing two thieves smash through glass cabinets and take off with up to $20,000 worth of valuables while two other offenders waited outside.
News of the robbery forced Coombers Brothers owners Carol and Gary Schefe to return from their family holiday in Cairns.
The pair said “enough was enough” and something had to be done about the rise in break and enters across Roma.
“Roma isn’t the same,” Mrs Schefe said.
“The locals are over it and something has to change.”
The raid lasted less than one minute and the owners said they are grateful for an eyewitness who saw the whole event and security for alerting them while in far north Queensland.
“We were alerted just after 3am by our security system then police called,” Mrs Schefe said.
“We had our lovely Anna and her dad Craig go down and speak with police while we were away.
“And we are so thankful to Ian Harms at Roma Glass and Aluminium for fixing the door as soon as police were finished and Georgia and Linda for cleaning up.”
The couple returned home straight after hearing the news and are now left with cleaning up the mess, contacting their insurance and installing tougher security systems.
“We actually had saved more than a $1000 with our insurance premium for not making a claim but that will change unfortunately,” Mr Schefe said.
“Trading was interrupted yesterday and there will be ongoing costs to install more security and glass panels.”
Coomber Brothers has been one of the longest-running businesses in the Maranoa and to the couple’s understanding, their store in the heart of Roma hadn’t been targeted by thieves for a century.
“These people aren’t mucking around anymore,” Mrs Schefe said.
“If anyone knows anything, they can remain anonymous but please tell police.
“Everyone needs to help one another and so many local businesses are suffering..”
The couple expressed how fortunate the event didn’t happen during the day and their staff were not affected.
They thanked Roma police for their ongoing assistance.
