Hailing from the rural Queensland town of Roma, 16-year-old Nate Glasby has big dreams for his motocross career.
Nate has been riding for 12 years, in which time he has competed in countless competitions, placed in many, and even won the southeast Queensland title in 2022.
“My dad bought me a Honda 50 at four (years old) and just continued from there,” Nate said.
“I just love riding dirt bikes. I love the competition, and just riding in general is fun.
“It’s a pretty risky sport, you’ve gotta be pretty confident in what you do. I just like the technical stuff.”
At a big meet in May, Nate was reminded again of the very real risk the sport poses.
“Two riders collided in the air, and a fellow fell off and got knocked out,” he said.
“They had to put him in an induced coma.”
Nate said he’s also had his fair share of accidents in his time, luckily none as serious as that.
“I’ve had a pretty big crash and got knocked out a few times,” he said.
“It pushes you back a bit, confidence wise, but you’ve just gotta move on.”
Despite everything, Nate came out of the competition on the podium, winning third place in the MX2 clubman class at the Sunshine State MX series in Toowoomba on May 11 and 12.
He said the key is focusing on himself.
“It’s pretty stressful, you’ve just gotta learn not to think about it and distract yourself from thinking about what happened,” Nate said.
“I just think about myself, what I’m going to do for the day, like what lines and what jumps I’m going to be taking.”
Nate also has big dreams, and a vision for himself in five years time.
“I’d like to be racing in the Australian supercross,” he said.
“Once you become pretty fast and get up there, you can get picked up by one of the teams like Yamaha or the Kawasaki team.
“It’d be really good if I could make a career out of it, but there’s a lot of good riders out there and it’s very expensive and it’s hard.”
As well as racing in bigger competitions in Toowoomba, Nate is also racing is local competitions, like the Go Girl Racing competition which was hosted in Roma on May 5 and 6, where his younger brother, Tully, also competed.
“(Motocross) is slowly starting to grow again in Roma,” Nate said.
