RUGBY UNION: It was down to the wire in extra time and the Roma Echidnas were facing off with a fierce Toowoomba Rangers for an elusive golden point that would seal their fate in the second semi-finals of the Risdon Cup.

After 110 minutes of gruelling football, Ben Bright pulled through for Roma, kicking a final penalty goal to secure a 41-38 win for the hometown hosts on Super Saturday.

"I always had faith that we could get the job done in the end,” Bright said.

"We had a bit of a slow start and were down 17-3 in the first half, yet ended up going into the break in front 22-17 - everyone was always there when they needed to be.”

The 19-man squad slugged it out against a determined Rangers side and Bright said the game could have easily been a repeat of last week's face-off between the sides.

"We went down to them by 11 points last weekend in Toowoomba, so to come out there and play the way we did on Sunday was really special,” he said.

"I'm sure the majority of the team haven't had an experience like this before - I know I definitely haven't - and being in front of a home crowd, we were really doing it for the town.”

Post-game, Bright was hailed as a Super Saturday superhero, having kicked three conversions and five penalty goals to push Roma over the edge.

But the team player emphasised the group effort and praised the series of tries from Cooper Dingle, Liam Murray-Walker, Jack Hannah and Matthew Wilkie.

"It is a great feeling but I have to give credit to the boys, because without them I wouldn't have been in the position to kick those goals,” Bright said.

"Especially in that golden point section where it was do or die, we played some of the best phase play we've done all season.”

Earlier on Super Saturday, Roma's C-grade side had a tough day at the office against the Toowoomba Bears, going down 24-10.

"Congratulations to our C-grade side for their outstanding season,” Bright said.

"They have done an awesome job to keep the team going and keep the club alive.”
