The huge federal funding windfall will allow LifeFlight to build a new aeromedical base at the Roma airport, bringing potentially lifesaving facilities to the southwest.

A major lifesaving upgrade for LifeFlight in Roma is set to jump-start improved facilities to benefit much of southwest Queensland.

The LifeFlight Foundation is set to receive $1,072,137 in federal funding to assist in the construction of a fully-functional aeromedical base at Roma Airport.

Federal Member for Maranoa David Littleproud said the government’s investment would deliver better facilities and create economic opportunities across the electorate.

“This is a proud day for the region in our fight to make sure we get our fair share,” Mr Littleproud said.

“The Government is backing this project so LifeFlight has the facilities it needs to save lives in the future. This is all part of our Government’s commitment to secure the future of regional Australia.”

LifeFlight chairman the Hon Rob Borbidge AO said he was delighted to have received advice that the grant application had been successful.

“We’re grateful the Australian Government is supporting the provision of LifeFlight’s essential services to the people of the Maranoa region and those who visit,” said Mr Borbidge.

“We are committed to the South West region and need a state of the art base, to match the state of the art service we are providing to this part of Queensland.

“This money from the Australian Government, granted to LifeFlight under the Building Better Regions Fund, will make this plan a reality much sooner; it enables us to start the project many years earlier than we thought possible.”

LifeFlight’s current facility is a hangar lease at the airport - but the service’s new helicopter doesn’t fit inside - necessitating the new facility.
