A Roma man yelled abuse at a magistrate after his bail application was refused on the grounds he was considered to be an extreme risk to the community.
Matthew Jay Glasby sat in the dock wearing a hi-vis work shirt, shorts and thongs as the court heard he allegedly choked and threatened to assault his ex-partner with a pitchfork.
Police prosecutor Barry Stevens told the Roma Magistrates Court that if the 34-year-old was found guilty of four offences he could face a two-year jail sentence.
“Did he not only choke the woman, (he) then produced a pitchfork which was 1.5 metres long and confronted the victim again and yelled ‘I will hit you, you black c--t’,” sergeant Stevens said.
Sergeant Stevens said Glasby then allegedly threatened to use the pitchfork against police when they arrived on scene.
“He doesn’t seem to understand the seriousness of this offence and seems to be a man who usually gets what he wants,” he said.
Glasby appeared erratic during his appearance and scoffed and mumbled under his breath while the prosecutor spoke.
Solicitor Trevor May said his client did not have a history of violent offending.
Mr May said his client’s relationship with the victim ended the day of the alleged attack.
Mr May said Glasby planned live with his parents in Roma if granted bail, at a residence just two blocks from the victim’s home.
Glasby was charged with choking/strangulation, threatening violence, going armed to cause fear, and obstructing police.
Magistrate Peter Saggers took five minutes to consider the facts and refuse Glasby’s bail application.
The man stood up and yelled “I’ve got a job to do, f--k safe” and “what a f--king joke”.
He continued to yell and swear at the magistrate and police as he was handcuffed and taken back into custody.
His matter was adjourned until September 29.
