A jilted boyfriend who burst into fits of jealous rage following the breakdown of his relationship called his former partner 30 times each day to accuse her of cheating on him and giving him a sexually transmitted infection.
The Roma Magistrates Court heard the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, found out the mother of his child was having an affair after they travelled to Brisbane to get a new car but she didn’t return with him and instead stayed with another man.
Police prosecutor Barry Stevens said in an attempt to find out where his ex-partner was, the Roma father contravened his domestic violence order on two occasions.
“He constantly text and called her and she said he would call on most days as much as 30 times,” he said.
“He accused her of sleeping with other guys and that she gave him genital warts.
“This caused her to stress, physically shake and panic, and she said she was too scared to return to Roma.”
The court heard the man also threatened to harm himself if things didn’t go his way.
Sergeant Stevens said when the man was interviewed by police he claimed the woman was controlling and manipulative.
“Clearly he has no idea about domestic violence as this is power of control,” he said.
He submitted that the man be placed on probation to assist with his domestic violence issues.
Solicitor Leslee Reed said her client admitted to calling the woman multiple times but didn’t mean to upset her and had no intention of harming himself.
“He initially was going to defend these charges but since reading the brief, he pleaded guilty. He has now only contacted her about their child,” she said.
The man pleaded guilty to two counts of contravening a domestic violence order.
Magistrate Peter Saggers told him to think about how comments of self-harm would impact his child.
“The manipulation of these threats … ‘if you don’t do this, I’ll kill myself’, you may want to think about how it would be if your child saw these comments,” he said.
“You are the boy’s father, whether you dislike or like the mother, these threats about doing yourself in affect your boy.”
The man was fined $750 and no conviction was recorded.
